Coinbase has taken a decisive step beyond crypto by launching stock trading on its platform, marking a major shift in how the company positions itself within global finance. The U.S. listed exchange said the move is part of a broader strategy to become what it calls the “Everything Exchange,” a single destination where users can trade across asset classes without leaving one app.

The initial rollout introduces hundreds of publicly listed stocks selected by market capitalization, trading volume, and liquidity. Coinbase plans to expand that list to thousands of stocks and exchange traded funds (ETFs) over the coming months. Users will be able to buy and sell equities alongside cryptocurrencies using either US dollars or USDC, managing traditional and digital assets from the same account.

Coinbase says stock trading will come with zero commissions and extended access compared to traditional brokerages. Trading will be available 24 hours a day, five days a week, removing many of the timing constraints that have long defined equity markets. For Coinbase, the feature represents more than a product addition. It is an attempt to redefine how retail investors interact with markets that have historically been fragmented across platforms.

The expansion comes as competition intensifies. Crypto focused firms like Robinhood, Kraken, and Gemini have been experimenting with tokenized equities and alternative market products, particularly outside the United States. Coinbase’s approach leans on its regulatory posture and infrastructure to integrate stocks directly, rather than offering limited exposure through synthetic products at launch.

Coinbase Expands to Prediction Markets: Aims to Become the Everything Exchange

Stock trading is only one part of a wider push. Coinbase is also integrating prediction markets, starting with Kalshi, which allows users to trade on the outcomes of real world events such as elections, economic data releases, sports, and cultural moments. Prices for these contracts fluctuate based on market consensus, turning public expectations into tradable signals.

The company is also broadening its derivatives offering. Coinbase already supports dozens of futures and perpetual contracts across crypto, commodities, and equity indices, with plans to significantly expand that catalog. Outside the United States, the exchange intends to introduce stock based perpetuals, giving international traders continuous exposure to U.S. equities through capital efficient instruments.

Another pillar of the strategy is tokenization. Coinbase is building out its institutional platform, Coinbase Tokenize, to support real world assets on blockchains. While details around custody and settlement are still evolving, the company says its regulatory approach puts it in a strong position as tokenized stocks and other assets mature.

Beyond trading, Coinbase is launching new services aimed at both individuals and businesses. Coinbase Advisor, an AI driven wealth management tool, is designed to provide personalized portfolio guidance and market insights directly inside the app. Coinbase Business is expanding access for startups and small companies that want to manage payments, crypto holdings, and financial workflows using regulated infrastructure.
