SBF Breaks His Silence: Tweets GM After Months of Silence

Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of collapsed crypto exchange FTX, posted a short tweet from prison saying “gm” after months without any public messages. This is his first visible communication since his interview with Tucker Carlson which he took part in from jail.

Bankman-Fried is serving 25 years in federal prison. He was convicted in 2023 on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy for taking billions of dollars in customer funds and moving them to his hedge fund, Alameda Research. The case also involved political donations and hidden liabilities. A federal judge sentenced him to 25 years in prison and ordered more than $11 billion in forfeiture.

Legal observers believe the actual time he spends behind bars could be less because of good conduct credits and time already served. Estimates put his time in prison at closer to 18 to 20 years if nothing changes in his case.

Earlier this month he appeared in a video interview with Tucker Carlson from a federal facility in Brooklyn. In the interview he said he shares a cell block with rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is waiting for trial on separate charges. He talked about playing chess with other inmates, using muffins as a form of currency, and how life in prison has changed his outlook.

The interview caused controversy. Reports say his crisis manager resigned after learning about it, and that Bankman-Fried was later placed in solitary confinement for giving the interview without approval.

His new tweet has drawn large attention as the timing is really putting fear in investors. Just this week, we’ve had one major attack from Lazarus, allegations that CZ owns 95% of a Perps DEX token, and that the SEC has withdrawn most of its prior laws and regulations regarding crypto. Is SBF really coming back after 2 years?
